Our tour chronicles the iconic criminals' bloody burst into America's collective mind and their violent end at the height of the Great Depression. As we navigate the historical events surrounding both of their lives, we examine the roles played by poverty, the authorities, and the predatory media in the making of the notorious outlaws.
- Starting Point: Clyde's Funeral Home - The last of the great mansions that once lined Ross Avenue in the early 1900s, and the former home of the Cofounder of the Dallas Morning News, Mr. A.H. Belo.
- Lillian McBride House: Site of one of the most notorious killings carried out by the hand of Clyde Barrow in West Dallas, on January 6, 1933.
- Old Criminal Courthouse: The structure on the corner of Houston and Main Street is the old criminal court building. Clyde spent time here as a teenager for being caught with that truckload of stolen turkeys.
- Clyde's Burial Site: Clyde of the Barrow Gang rests in a quiet cemetery alongside his brother Marvin “Buck” Barrow in their family plot. Marvin was killed in a shootout with Missouri police in 1933.
- Bonnie’s Childhood School: Eagle Ford School, it was here at the Cement City School that Bonnie would win both the spelling bee and the poetry writing contest.
- Bonnie's burial Site: Bonnie Parker is buried in Dallas at Crown Hill Memorial Park. Often visited, you’ll find mementos left behind on the marker. If you like history, it’s a can’t miss.
- Ending Point: Easter Sunday Killing - On Easter Sunday, 1934, they sat in a car waiting to rendezvous with Bonnie's beloved mother, for whom she had bought a white rabbit. As she fed it lettuce, two highway patrolmen pulled up...
How these two individuals become America's most beloved mass murderers and bonified media stars is a story that cultural historians, biographers, and filmmakers have been chewing on for decades. It's about journalism, the economy, and especially the rise of images — both still and moving.
